Scientific Director EAISI

The Eindhoven Artificial Intelligent Systems Institute (EAISI) was established in the spring of 2019 as a cross-departmental institute. It has a staff consisting of a program acquisition team, a team focusing on (inter)national positioning, and a scientific team. It builds on the strengths of AI research in the Data Science Center Eindhoven (DSC/e) and the High-tech Systems Center and on ongoing collaborations among TU/e researchers.

EAISI aims to develop AI-technology for real-time autonomous decision-making, which has a direct impact on the real world. Using our traditional strengths in systems engineering and our close ties with industry, TU/e accelarates the shift towards a next generation machine-data driven intelligence, which is intimately connected to the open world through: 1) data & algorithms, 2) humans and 3) engineering systems. In other words: EAISI wants to make machines intelligent.

EAISI vision: “Worldwide, society faces challenges with future impact on our daily lives e.g. in the field of health, mobility and high tech systems. With Artificial Intelligence moving from “Data-only” to “Data-Human-Machine”, we aim to use our strengths to leverage the huge potential of the next generation of AI: “AI for the real world”
EAISI mission: “EAISI aims to develop AI-technology for real-time autonomous decision-making in engineering systems that interact with and support humans. Through multi-disciplinary cooperation, our know-ledge of AI in three fundamental aspects: Data/Algorithms + Humans/Ethics + Engineering. It is our ambition to create value for all people by connecting groundbreaking scientific research on these three fundamentals, translating into applications, and educating first class students. This way, EAISI contributes to regional, national and European public-private ecosystems. A key question is which type of society we want to be. EAISI aims to improve the development of meaningful technical solutions to societal challenges, via high-tech systems and robotics. We believe that TU/e can significantly contribute to speed up the AI transition with EAISI.

The university is further investing in AI research and education. EAISI has had an exceptional start and significant impact in the national discussion already. The internal community has been largely mapped and mobilized and the organization has been set-up  The task now is to further build and consolidate the institute. 
In more detail, the following challenges are ahead, characterized by the keywords: multi-disciplinary, collaboration and impact:

• Together with the departments, implement the multi-facetted (multi-pillar) research agenda and roadmap for research in AI, and stimulate and monitor further strategic investments accordingly.
• Implement the vision on long-term developments related to AI in the three key research domains Data and Algorithms, Humans and Ethics, and Engineering Systems, and in the application domains Health, High-Tech Systems and Mobility (which represent TU/e strengths).
• Further stimulating an inclusive feeling about EAISI as being ‘our institute within TU/e.
• To further stimulate  and facilitate the visibility of AI research at TU/e to the outside world.
• Stimulating crossovers between research, education and collaboration with external partners (e.g. Challenge Based Learning, Post graduate education).
